Science dictates that winter begins at the winter solstice – usually December 21st or 22nd. Bishkek’s municipal government, however, dictates that winter begins on October 27 – the day the city’s central heating system is switched on. About halfway through the hike, I slipped on a wet stone, and suddenly found myself ankle-deep in a glacial river. It’s still quite amazing to me just how close these untamed mountains lie to Bishkek.
