I recently unearthed this relic while preparing to reformat an old hard drive. This was the first graphic I ever created in Illustrator, and the untidy linework reflects my unfamiliarity with the program. Unfortunately, so too does the project file; I’d like to create an animated or interactive version of the maps, but I can hardly decode the layering schema (or lack thereof)! I’ll have to set aside some time for a serious revision.
To create the maps, I essentially just traced the GPS-tracked routes of six major cities’ subways, and then placed these geographically true-to-scale paths alongside silhouettes of the official transit maps. The magnitude of distortion is pretty remarkable, I think.
